We Dwell in Common: Ecumenical Resources for Interfaith Engagement

Interfaith engagement has been recognized, especially over the course of the last half-century, as one of the definitively urgent tasks of our time, and current academic research has rightly emphasized that no historical religious tradition is intelligible apart from its evolving and constitutive entanglement with religious others. Less widely appreciated, but no less urgent to address (particularly by those already invested in interfaith engagement) is the decisive role played by intra-religious conflict in any noteworthy inter-religious encounter. Therefore, ecumenical methods and perspectives—most often associated with the quest for peace, reconciliation, and unity among Christians over the last century—offer far more to interfaith consciousness, solidarity, and peacebuilding than is typically understood to be the case.

Join Graymoor Ecumenical and Interreligious Institute, Interfaith Center of New York, and an international panel of distinguished experts, for a webinar exploring the repertoire of ecumenical perspectives and methods that are crucial resources for interfaith engagement today—particularly important as ecumenical training is increasingly marginal in most programs of theological education and interreligious dialogue. Following a presentation by Linda Hogan, Professor of Ecumenics at Trinity College Dublin and Former Head of the Irish School of Ecumenics, we will hear responses from and conversation among leading figures in US interfaith engagement and interreligious studies.

Our panel:

  • Prof. Linda Hogan, Professor of Ecumenics and Former Head of the Irish School of Ecumenics, Trinity College Dublin
  • Rabbi Prof. Rachel Mikva, Herman E. Schaalman Professor of Jewish Studies and Senior Faculty Fellow, InterReligious Institute, Chicago Theological Seminary
  • Dr. Zeyneb Sayilgan, Muslim Scholar, Institute for Islamic, Jewish, and Christian Studies (Baltimore, MD)
  • Dr. Tarunjit Singh Butalia, Executive Director, Religions for Peace USA

Ecclesiological Investigations: Chicago 2024

June 26-28, 2024
Chicago, Illinois

Chicago Theological Seminary, Hyde Park, Chicago, IL

Graymoor Ecumenical & Interreligious Institute is one of the organizing sponsors for the 15th international conference of the Ecclesiological Investigations International Research Network, which will be held June 26-28, 2024, on the campus of Chicago Theological Seminary in Chicago, Ill., USA. The theme of the conference will be “Embodying Ecclesial Diversity.”

The Network invites proposals for papers and sessions that address all aspects of the theme of the conference, concerning both doctrine and practice. We especially encourage papers that address or explore:

  • ways in which churches have honored ecclesial diversity, or can do so more effectively
  • the marks and practices of churches that embody diversity
  • how churches attend to, or do not attend to, their own evolving diversities
  • pathways that might heal, restore, embrace, and transfigure the body of Christ

Please visit here for all necessary information about the call for papers, submission instructions, and application for the 2024 Graymoor Scholarships, which will again support the participation of emerging voices (particularly students and seminarians) in the gathering.
